THE ASIA BADMINTON CONFEDERATION ARCHIVE

Established in 1959, The Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) is the governing body of badminton in Asia. It is one of the 5 continental bodies under the flag of The International Badminton Federation (IBF). The ABC Archive Collection includes both The Asia Cup and The Asian Cup Badminton Championships.

INTRODUCTION

The Confederation was established in 1959 and the headquarters are based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The aim is to maintain the status of Asia as the benchmark for world badminton, and the Confederation now has 39 member states.

The ABC are Asia’s premier badminton competition. Held every year, the event features top Asian players in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Most of the world’s top players come from Asia and the event is often the venue for some of the best badminton in the world. Players gain valuable Olympic qualifying points through their results at the ABC.
The Asia Cup is the biannual Asian Men’s National Team Championship. Until 1997, the event had a limited field and was for individual contestants (top 16 men’s/women’s singles and the top 8 men’s/women’s/doubles teams in Asia).

In 1998 the event changed to a National team-orientated tournament based on a 3-tie format, including 2 singles & 1 doubles match per tie. Players from Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan & Vietnam compete for this trophy.
