INTRODUCTION

Since 1970 The New York City Marathon has attracted over 550,000 competitors from over 100 countries around the world, making it a truly global event.

The 26.2 mile race is contested through the 5 boroughs of New York City (Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhattan), beginning at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in the borough of Staten Island and finishing in Manhattan’s Central Park. For some, the 26.2 mile journey is a personal challenge, a test of endurance and persistence. For others, the mere participation in this event has opened the door to extraordinary individual achievement, empowerment and attainment.

All of the momentous and empowering moments of the race are captured in The New York Marathon archive, providing extensive footage from 1998-2007’s races.
