INTRODUCTION

The 24 Heures du Mans is the oldest endurance race in the world, the first race being held on 26th-27th May 1923. Today the race is generally held in June of each year and the 13.6 km Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans is the longest public road circuit in the world.

To be classified in the final race, a car must cross the finish line after 24 hours of racing around the circuit. This can sometimes lead to dramatic scenes where damaged cars wait in the pits or on the edge of the track close to the finish line for hours, then restart their engines and crawl across the line to be listed with a finishing distance, rather than being dismissed with DNF (Did Not Finish).

Louis Rosier won the race in 1950 with his son Jean-Louis Rosier, who only drove the car for two laps. In 2005, Tom Kristensen set a record of seven victories; including six in a row, pulling ahead of legend Jacky Ickx who has a total of six wins. Another milestone was reached in 2006 when a diesel car won the race for the first time.

The 24 Heures du Mans Archive holds over 350 hours of footage including all races from 1995 to present day and and selected races dating back to 1988.
