INTRODUCTION

The IRB is responsible for both the governance of the rules of rugby union and the management of the major international rugby union competitions. The Rugby World Cup (RWC) is the major event managed by The IRB and is one of the world’s greatest sporting events. The IRB is also responsible for the management of The Rugby World Cup Sevens and The Women’s Rugby World Cup – two highly prestigious rugby union events.

The inaugural Rugby World Cup took place in 1987 with the hosts New Zealand winning The Webb Ellis Trophy. The RWC is held every four years and guarantees top class, often nail biting, and dramatic, rugby matches. Some of the game’s greatest stars have taken part in The RWC over the years, including Jonah Lomu, Marc Ellis, Sean Fitzpatrick, David Campese, John Eales, George Gregan, Jonny Wilkinson, Jannie de Beer, Serge Blanco, Francois Pienaar, Gavin Hastings, Rob Andrew, Jeremy Guscott, Keith Wood, Rupeni Caucaunibuca and Neil Jenkins.

Over the past 15 years Rugby Sevens has become an established and important aspect of the international rugby scene, and this has been aided by the high profile of The Rugby World Cup Sevens (The Melrose Cup). This event is held every four years and, like The RWC, also features some of the world’s best players, including Waisale Serevi, Marika Vunibaka, Lawrence Dallaglio and Eric Rush. Although the Rugby Sevens game involves shorter time periods, the matches are always fast-paced, high scoring and exciting. Additionally, The Women’s Rugby World Cup takes place every four years and is a showcase of the best action in the women's game. The growing popularity of this event is testament to both the successful spread of women's rugby around the globe by The IRB and the exceptionally high standards of skill which can be found in the women’s game.
