INTRODUCTION

The America's Cup regatta is a challenge-driven yacht series that currently involves a best-of-nine series of match racing (a duel between two boats). The duel takes place between the holder of the America’s Cup and a challenger who is found via The Louis Vuitton Cup event. If the challenging team wins the America’s Cup, the Cup's ownership is transferred from the defender's yacht club to the winning team's yacht club. Originally sailed between England and America, it has now developed into a worldwide racing event. Over the years, the race has featured some of the world’s top sailors, such as Sir Peter Blake, Russell Coutts and Dennis Conner.

For a challenger to win the America's Cup, the challenger must first win the Louis Vuitton Cup by defeating other challengers to earn the right for a match against the defender of the Cup. The Louis Vuitton Cup hosts 13 "Acts" of competition, with the first 3 acts not awarding points toward rankings. The origins of this competition lie in 1983, when seven yacht clubs from five different countries presented simultaneous challenges for the America’s Cup. Due to this large number, it was necessary to organise a selection series to decide which one of the seven would go forward to the America’s Cup.

The America’s Cup is the ultimate yachting event and the America’s Cup Archive brings together both programming and long form coverage of the America’s Cup, The Louis Vuitton Cup and the recently established Louis Vuitton Acts. The Archive dates back to 1987.
