INTRODUCTION

The FIS was founded in 1924 in Chamonix, France by 14 member nations. Today the FIS has a membership of 101 National Ski Associations and is based in Oberhofen am Thunersee, Switzerland. Incorporating and continually encompassing a wide range of ski sports, the two main disciplines governed by the FIS are Nordic and Alpine Skiing.

Nordic skiing is a winter sport that encompasses all types of skiing where the heel of the boot cannot be fixed to the ski. This includes a wide range of ski equipment and techniques such as classic and skate cross country skiing, ski jumping, biathlon, and telemark skiing. It also involves racing. The Nordic World Ski Championships is a major skiing event and happens in the winter of odd-number years, between The Winter Olympics.

Alpine skiing (or downhill skiing) is a sport involving sliding down snow-covered hills with long, thin skis attached to each foot. The Alpine World Ski Championships were established in 1931 and originally held every four years. However, due to its enormous success and popularity, the Championships now take place every two years at some of the world’s premier ski resorts. The Alpine World Ski Championships take place over 15 days, with men and women competing in five different disciplines: Downhill, Super G, Giant Slalom, Slalom and Combined.

All the excitement of these premier Alpine and Nordic events, including legendary moves from Bill Demong, Hannu Manninen, Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Parson, can be found in The FIS Archive.
