THE ITALIAN RUGBY UNION ARCHIVE

The Italian Rugby Federation (Federazione Italiana Rugby) is the governing body of rugby union in Italy. Italian rugby has gained popularity and developed a worldwide recognition through the success of the national team. The Italian national team competes in the Six Nations Championship and is a regular at the Rugby World Cup, being classified as a tier-one nation by the International Rugby Board.

INTRODUCTION


Rugby has had a surprisingly old history of play in Italy. As far back as 25 July 1911 a "Propaganda Committee" was formed to promote rugby union in Italy. In 1928 this body became the Federazione Italiana Rugby (FIR).

In 1934 The Federazione Italiana Rugby Federation were founder members of the Federation International de Rugby Amateur and the FIR joined The International Rugby Board (IRB) in 1987 when they took part in the inaugural World Cup.

The Italian Rugby Union Archive includes all Italian World Cup qualifiers and national team home games.
