INTRODUCTION

The objective of The ITF is to further grow and develop the sport worldwide; to develop the game at all levels at all ages for both able-bodied and disabled men and women; to make, amend and uphold the rules of the game; to promote the International Team Championships and competitions of The ITF; to preserve the integrity and independence of tennis as a sport; and to perform all without discrimination on grounds of colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin, age, sex or religion.

The Davis Cup and The Fed Cup are the premier international team events in men’s and women’s tennis respectively. These events are contested on an annual basis between players from competing countries in a knock-out format. 131 countries entered The Davis Cup in 2006 and 89 nations competed in The Fed Cup in 2006. Many of the world’s best players have featured in ties at these long-running events; including Rod Laver, John McEnroe, David Lloyd, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, Andy Roddick, Martina Navratilova, Virginia Wade, Monica Seles, Kim Clijsters and Amelie Mauresmo. The Hopman Cup is a mixed team event which takes place annually in Perth, Australia and past winners include Roger Federer and Martina Hingis, and Serena Williams and James Blake.
