INTRODUCTION

The RFU was instrumental in founding the Home Nations Championship in 1883, which became the Five Nations Championship in 1910 with the inclusion of France, and then ultimately became the Six Nations Championship in 2000 with the inclusion of Italy. In 1995 rugby union made the switch from an amateur to professional game and The RFU was influential in overseeing this process. The RFU is committed to developing rugby ethics from ‘grass roots’ level as well as building state of the art facilities, managing the elite professional game in English clubs, and creating a world class England rugby side.

The Autumn International Test Matches see England face teams such as New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, South Africa, and Fiji in a series of home games held at Twickenham, London. The line-up of touring sides visiting England changes each year and this allows England to pit themselves against the world’s best players. These Test Matches are always filled with drama and excitement, and many thrilling encounters take place. The RFU is also responsible for organising the annual Varsity Match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the Army v Navy matches.

The RFU Archive includes footage of some of the world’s best players such as Jonny Wilkinson, Jason Robinson, Martin Johnson, Lawrence Dallaglio, Tim Rodber, Rob Howley, Keith Wood, Jonah Lomu, George Gregan and John Eales. It is a vast collection of rugby action with footage from 1996 to the present day.
