| TIGER’S TORREY TRIUMPH! Golf: 108th U.S. Open Championship Torrey Pines Golf Course: Tiger Woods battled not only his opponents, but a knee injury and a fractured tibia to claim his third U.S. Open title and 14th professional Major. With a birdie on the 18th, Woods forced the first 18 hole play-off since 1994 against compatriot Rocco Mediate, ranked 157th in the world.
The 18 hole play-off went down to the wire, with Tiger once again extending the competition by birdieing the last and taking The Championship into a 91st hole. Despite the huge efforts of the affable Mediate, Tiger prevailed to become the 108th U.S. Open champion.
This win ties Woods with Bobby Jones for the most USGA titles won, and takes him within four of Jack Nicklaus’s record of eighteen Major titles.

| | Athletics: AF Golden League Berlin: The newly named AF Golden League kicked off its 2008 schedule in June and has already seen some dramatic results.
21-year-old Josephine Onyia from Spain was the surprise winner of the women’s 100m hurdles, beating both the world indoor record holder Susanna Kallur, and the world indoor champion Lolo Jones with a time of 12.50 seconds.
But it was 18-year-old Pamela Jelimo of Kenya who made the biggest headline of the event, when she ran the 800 metres in 1 minute, 54.99 seconds, the fastest time in eleven years and only bettered by five women in the history of the sport.
The next AF Golden League (formally the IAAF Golden League) event is in Rome on the 11th July. For all IAAF Archive footage requests please call +44 (0) 208 233 5500 or visit www.imgmediaarchive.com/iaaf
| | Cycling: Tour de Suisse Switzerland: 22-year-old Czech cyclist Roman Kreuziger became the youngest competitor to win the Tour de Suisse when he completed the nine stage tour in 35 hours, 43 minutes and 46 seconds; 49 seconds ahead of rival Andreas Klöden of Germany, to capture the greatest victory of his career.
An eighth stage victory by Kreuziger put him in prime position to win, and despite Fabian Cancellara winning the final stage of the tour in his home town, and Klöden beating Kreuziger on the last stage by two places, it was not enough to impact on the final standings.
This win puts Kreuziger’s world ranking to number three and lifts Andreas Klöden to number two. Damiano Cunego leads by eight points with six races remaining.
