Rugby Union: The IRB Rugby World Cup 2007 drew to a close in France with South Africa winning The Webb Ellis Trophy for a 2nd time, 15-6. England, surprising many by reaching a 2nd consecutive final, provided stiff opposition and only succumbed to Percy Montgomery & Francois Steyn's penalty kicking. England's Mark Cueto came closest to breaking the deadlock with a try eventually disallowed by the video referee.

Tennis:

In Madrid, Argentine David Nalbandian capped a fine sporting month for him and his countrymen by winning the latest ATP Masters Series event. He did so by beating Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the way and Roger Federer (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) in the final, becoming the first person in 14 years to beat the world's top 3 in the same event. Nalbandian not only had to overcome his opponents, but also the ball girls who spend the rest of the year as models!

Rugby League:

The Super League Grand Final took place last month in a hotly anticipated contest between the season's best two sides. Leeds Rhino's gave Coach Tony Smith the perfect farewell, overcoming favourites St Helens, with impressive performances coming from Jamie Peacock, Rob Burrow and Gareth Ellis. The Rhino's, who finished a point behind the Saints at the end of the regular season, turned on the style, running in 5 tries on their way to a 33-6 demolition. It was the Rhino's second Super League Title under Smith, and he will hope to continue his winning ways in his new role as GB Head Coach.

FAST FACT

The first Speed event of the FIS Ski World Cup will take place later this month at Lake Louise in Canada. Racers will cover the 3km course by dropping 3,250 feet in under 2 minutes!

The HSBC World Match Play Championship, held recently at Wentworth, has the richest prize in golf. Ernie Els picked up a cool £1 million for his record 7th victory at the tournament, with a 6&4 drubbing of Argentina's Angel Cabrera, who had to console himself with the £400,000 runners up prize!
