Paula Creamer was one shot off equalling Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA record for the lowest 18-hole score, when she carded a 60 at the opening round of the Jaime Farr Owens Corning Classic in Ohio on July 10th.
Creamer birdied 9 of the last 11 holes to record an eleven under the par 71 course. She knew she was playing well, however was completely unaware that she was so close to the record, under the impression that the course was a par 72, rather than a par 71. So focussed on her game, it was only after finishing the round that she and her caddie realised.
Commenting afterwards Creamer laughed “I didn't know it was a par 71, I thought it was a par 72. If I would have known that, who knows?". Creamer kept her cool and went on to win the tournament by two strokes, despite feeling the pressure to perform following such an impressive opening round.
This score makes Creamer only the fourth LPGA Tour player in the history of the game to shoot 60, the others being Meg Mallon, Jung Yeon Lee and Anna Acker-Macosko. However, Sorenstam’s 59 shot record set in 2001 at the Standard Register PING on a par 72 course remains unbeaten…..for now anyway!
